MORNING SESSION (two parts)

 

PRIVACY AND SECURITY WORKSHOP

Part I: HIPAA/HITECH Privacy Rule (1.5 hours) -­‐ Objectives:

After completing Part I of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand Privacy Rule fundamentals 
  • Define terms used in the HIPAA Privacy Rule
  • Summarize the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Rule 
  • Describe the Privacy Rule’s administrative requirements for Covered Entities ad Business Associates
  • Identify Uses and Disclosures that may violate the Privacy Rule 
  • Summarize Individual Rights under the Privacy Rule 
  • Recognize federal and state agencies responsibilities and enforcement authority 
  • Recognize potential violations, penalty structures, and corrective action approaches 
  • Describe the relationship between a Covered Entity and Business Associate 
  • Describe a Covered Entities administrative responsibility to protect health information 
  • HIPAA preemption of State Law 
  • Case studies and interactive discussion of topics learned 

Part II: HIPAA/HITECH Security Rule (1.5 hours) -­‐ Objectives:

After completing Part I of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss fundamental requirements of the Security Rule 
  • Discuss the HIPAA Security Rule Standards and Implementation Specification 
  • Explain how HIPAA Security Rule objectives and key concepts relate to building and evaluating a Security Rule (compliance program 
  • Analyze Security Rule’s requirements and implications for enforcement
  • Describe the three types of HIPSS Security Rule Standards that must be implemented to support the protection of electronic protected health information (ePHI)
  • Fundamentals of performing a Security Risk Analysis vs. a full Privacy and Security Assessment 
  • Discuss the Interrelationship between the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule 
  • Case studies and interactive discussion on topics learned 
  • Mock audit to assess individuals compliance in their practice/organizational environment
