April 2010

POHMS President's Message

Dear POHMS members,

I would first like to recognize Karen Pagano who retired from her practice as well as from CHOC at the end of 2009. Karen is one of the original founders of POHMS and CHOC, and together with that team created an organization that is recognized nationally. We will miss not only her professional expertise but her gift for creating some of the most entertaining and successful meetings! From what we hear Karen is already enjoying her retirement, learning new things (bridge!), winning at the casinos and exploring everything available to her - of course!! Happy Retirement!!

Well here we are again - coding changes, decreased fees, increased expenses, requests for support and audits threats!! As Administrators/Managers we streamline services, evaluate operations, embrace technology and reorganize our team hoping we can survive another year serving our patients and supporting our physicians and staff. To further assist our members with day to day operations of their practices, we will be sending out a POHMS survey - yes, another survey - however, we will make every effort to create a painless process and will limit the survey to a single page. We hope to address the daily challenges we face and utilize the range of expertise we share within our organization. Our first survey was emailed this week and addresses EMR, employee internet use and annual salary increases. We hope that you will take the time to answer these questions, your opinion is invaluable, and we will share the results at our bi-monthly meetings. If you have any questions you would like us to add to any survey, please contact Fran.

A special "THANK YOU" to our Corporate Sponsors who have renewed their support of POHMS for 2010!! Please know that without this support it would be difficult if not impossible to continue serving our members and their practices.

I look forward to a challenging and rewarding term as President!

Respectfully,
Mary Lois Moss
POHMS President

Executive Director's Message

Here we are already into the middle of April of 2010; it has been a very busy first quarter! The POHMS Program Committee is working on agendas for the remaining 2010 meetings and they want to bring the membership great speakers on topics you want to hear about. Please send any suggestions/speakers to my attention.

Please note that an additional program is being added this year, this is for Active and Associate Members only. The POHMS Leadership Development Program will be held on Friday, June 11 at the Marriott West in West Conshohocken, PA. Further information will be soon be sent to you.

This program is being sponsored entirely by Abraxis BioScience.

CMS Update:

President signs extension bill, Medicare physician payment freeze now extended to May 31. This means that the 21.2% Medicare fee cut is averted until June 1st.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the following statement this morning:

On April 15, 2010, President Obama signed into law the "Continuing Extension Act of 2010." This law extends through May 31, 2010, the zero percent update to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule that was in effect for claims with dates of service January 1, 2010 through March 31, 2010. The law is retroactive to April 1, 2010. Consequently, effective immediately, claims with dates of service April 1 and later, which were being held by Medicare contractors, are being released for processing and payment. Please keep in mind that the statutory payment floors still apply and, therefore, clean electronic claims cannot be paid before 14 calendar days after the date they are received by Medicare contractors (29 calendar days for clean paper claims).
